Iceland, the third day

Today, we take a bus to visit the waterfalls of Gullfoss, the geysers and the Thingvellin National Park. We start at 9 a.m. being in a good mood, the weather is fine.

We first stop at the centre of the Icelandic production of fruits and vegetables. We visit a greenhouse where among others bananas are grown - right next to a snackbar and a gambling den. Like 90% of the Icelandic households, the greenhouses are heated by thermal energy and they are situated in an area of hot springs.

"hot stones"

In front of the greenhouse, something interesting happens. Fine sulphur steam appears between the stones of the pavement. The stones aren't hot enough to fry eggs, but it's impossible to touch them longer than about 1-2 seconds. First, I suppose that a main bursted, but Harry tells us that a spring appears at the surface of the earth.

We go on to the waterfall of Gullfoss which Chris considers as less impressive than the famous Rheinfall in Schaffhausen, Switzerland.

Then we visit the geysers or - to be correct - the one geyser exists but is inactive, there are various small active ones instead which every few minutes eject the excess pressure of the springs about 10m high.

The Thingvellir National Park is the last place to visit for today. Here it was possible to prouve the separation of the Eurasian and the American continent, that is the theory of Wegener.

Well, that's all for today
